Social Studies

The Social Studies Department at Sleepy Hollow Middle School and Sleepy Hollow High School consists of fourteen highly trained, collaborative professionals who are passionate about their content and committed to reaching the needs of all students.  We utilize a variety of strategies and are always evolving and perfecting the skill and art of teaching.   

The new Social Studies Framework focuses on the teaching of social studies practices such as gathering, interpreting and using evidence, chronological reasoning and causation, comparison and contextualization.  Our lessons engage students in the analysis of documents representing a variety of points of view. Students are then encouraged to defend their own answers to compelling questions with evidence.

Heterogeneous classes in the middle school study the eastern hemisphere in 6^th grade, and American history in 7^th and 8^th grade.  In the high school, students take Global History and Geography in 9^th and 10^th grade, United States History and Government in 11^th grade, and Economics/Participation in Government in 12^th grade.  High school classes are offered on the Regents and Honors level.  The social studies department offers three Advanced Placement courses – AP World History, AP American History, and AP Government- in addition to Syracuse University Project Advance Psychology and Syracuse University Personal Finance.  We have several elective offerings including Law, Psychology, and an individualized senior experience for seniors pursuing internships.  Academic Intervention Services are provided during the school day and in an afterschool academy.
